ALL ABOARD THE MENSTRUAL CUP TRAIN

By: Megan Allen

“A period cup? Gross. You’re telling me to go up in there with my hands? To empty and clean out my own BLOOD? Nobody wants to see that, including me. It’s better to stick in a tampon and remove and throw it away it without a look. Period blood is gross and I’m stuck dealing with it every month and I hate it and I feel like I can’t do anything blah blah blah…”

Any of this sound familiar? If so, it’s time to get out of the dark menstrual ages and step into the light.

Period cups are your ticket into the new era of period care. A cup saves you money, creates far less waste than pads and tampons and is healthier for you. What more could you want for your period? Hence the mass period cup conversion rates! Seriously, after people start using the cup they go on self called missions to preach the cup, it’s rather inspiring and moving (My eyes are tearing up as I write this).

One Saalt cup saves the average woman $1500 over a cup’s 10 year life. Each tampon box purchase adds up, right? (Not to mention the disheartening pink tax.) Let’s say the average woman uses 300 tampons a year. Over one cup’s lifetime it would divert 3000 tampons from landfills. Every little bit counts especially with over 20 billion menstrual products disposed of each year in the U.S. Poor garbageman/earth. But it’s not just better for the environment, it’s also good for the environment in your vagina believe it or not!

Our entire reproductive system is a sensitive ecosystem and pads and tampons often contain/treated with toxic chemicals. A Saalt cup is made from medical grade silicone and is BPA and latex-free. A cup promotes your natural pH balance of your vagina instead of causing dryness like a tampon. You can also wear your Saalt cup for up to 12 hours before emptying, if you know your flow, ya know.

Beyond statistics and data, cups truly impact the way women interact with their anatomy. Do you know if your cervix is placed high, low or even tilted? Do you know what your cervix is, exactly? Saalt’s goal is to help release women from period shame through education so we can all feel empowered by knowing our own anatomy inside and out!

Beyond your personal reality, there is a direct correlation between period care and worldwide women’s rights. Here’s how Saalt period cups can make the difference.

Cups empower girls and women in need. In East Africa, most girls miss 20 percent of the school year because of their period. Many drop out of school because of it. Also common in this region, 24 percent of women miss 45 days of work each year because of their periods. Access to safe menstrual products, such as a Saalt cup, changes lives. 20 percent more time in school and 45 more days of pay, to be specific.

With a cup, women and girls can safely and effectively manage their periods, giving them the confidence to participate in work, school and other daily activities comfortably. There is currently an enormous amount of missed opportunities in the world as ladies are held back by their periods. We say no more. Saalt partners with Her International and Period.org to provide menstrual cups and educational opportunities to women across the world.

Cups are empowering. Cups mean freedom. Cups also mean comfort, and yes, saying hello to your own period blood (FYI it’s actually not even scary). Hop on board the cup train, and say goodbye to the good ole days of period huts and overpriced and dangerous cotton/poly period catch-alls. The future of period care is here. The future of period care is a cup.

If you have any lingering cup questions, please feel free to reach out. We talk cups all day and we would love to chat.
